21-Day-Fast Devotional - Day 21: Trusting in God

Trusting in God

“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.”

Luke 1:38

In the same chapter of Luke 1, we find the story about Zechariah, he received the visit of an angel while he was on duty in the temple. The angel told him about his descendant’s promise and purpose. As we all know Zechariah didn’t believe and his reaction was just simply questioning the veracity of what was told. Some time passed and another visit occurred, but this time was to Mary the virgin, she was highly troubled and certainly with some doubt — totally understandable. In the end, she accepts and trusts in the promise of God. It is important to realize the environment and circumstances where God shows up to them. Zechariah was a priest, and he was in the holy place where only God can be, and he ended up not believing in God, not believing in the power of God. On the other hand, the environment and circumstances of Mary were different; she was a virgin with no husband, and she received the visit in the town where she was living. Mary knew what could happen to her if she was found pregnant outside of marriage. She ended up accepting and trusting God.

Reflecting on that, we should ask ourselves who we are, are we like Zechariah? Knowing God but questioning his motives and his plan. Or are we like Mary? Where everything around us seems incorrect, it can’t be or seems wrong, but nevertheless, we decide to accept and trust God’s promise.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we thank you. Thanks for allowing us to enjoy this fasting time, searching for a better communion with you. Forgive our sins and our doubts, Lord. Teach us how not to believe our surroundings, not to believe our difficulties, instead look straight to you, because your plan is good and your plan is perfect, Amen.
